UPDATE: MLA welcomes Canada’s decision to remove seafood from retaliatory tariffs

Canada’s decision to remove seafood and fish products from its retaliatory tariff list is welcome news and a relief to Maine lobstermen and the businesses and communities that depend on the lobster fishery. 

MaineHealth is offering a certified nursing assistant (CNA) apprenticeship training program, providing a paid pathway for individuals interested in beginning a health care career. 

The Bobby Blackman Scholarship Fund was founded by the Knights of Pythias. They recognized that not only did Bob Blackman work in the trades, but he supported them as well. This fund is dedicated to helping local students pursue careers in skilled trades by providing scholarships for trade school education.

It isn't going to happen, but a data center eyed by a man with a Boothbay tie stood to bring to Wiscasset millions of dollars in taxes and about 1,700-2,300 temporary construction jobs and 100-200 permanent jobs, and would have required upgrades to roads, fiber and other infrastructure, and required some more land, according to claims in nearly a year's worth of documents just released. 

The season is coming to a close at the Maine State Aquarium, but not before visitors have a chance to have a whale-y good time!

On Saturday, Aug. 22, visitors can experience the thrill of stepping inside a life-size inflatable humpback whale named “Chunk.” This immersive, interactive experience for participants of all ages explores the wonders of marine life and is designed and conducted by award-winning, nationally recognized wildlife educator Jessica Woodend. The 43-foot inflatable whale can accommodate up to 20 children or 15 adults at a time.

The residents and staff of St. Andrews Village were ready to greet two special guests Friday morning, Aug. 14, outside the Village Inn.

The special guests had nothing to say, but the greeters were sure smitten with them.

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences (BLOS) presented the fourth and final Café Sci lecture of the 2026 season Aug. 12, to an audience made up of the public, fellow researchers and supporters of the organization. The lecture series was sponsored by Corient, and ranged in topics from trace metals in the Antarctic, to microbes that thrive in harsh environments, how technology is leading to the discovery of new marine species and the final presentation, "Resilient Reefs: How Algae-Grazing Fish Maintain Balance in Coral Ecosystems."

AUGUSTA (August 11, 2026)—An increase of single-family homes for sale in Maine has enticed awaiting buyers’ interest. According to Maine Listings, 1,697 homes sold in July—a jump of 7.75 percent from July 2025. The median sales price (MSP) also rose 1.67 percent to $427,000 comparing July 2026 to July 2025. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less.

The non-binding question on exploring a regional high school got its second nod Aug. 4. Wiscasset selectmen last month decided to put the question on the Nov. 3 ballot. And last week, they approved the municipal officers' order to make that happen.

The question reads: "Should Wiscasset explore the possibility of a single regional high school serving students from multiple area towns?"

By Maine law, the town clerk needed the order at least 60 days before Election Day.

On Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, a worker using a W.D. Matthews boom lift secured the familiar weathervane modeled after the schooner Bowdoin back on the church spire.

Last week, over 250 friends and supporters of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences came together for an evening of discovery and inspiration. Through the Big Splash fundraiser, the institute raised over $800,000 in sponsorships and bids — far exceeding the original fundraising goal — all of which will go to support the institute’s “bold science for our blue planet.”

Midcoast Conservancy is pleased to announce it will be hosting the State of the Lake on Thursday, Aug. 20, 4-6 p.m., at the Jewell Lodge at Wavus Camp in Jefferson.
